Exhibition for the 110th Anniversary of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis
As part of the Budapest Photo Festival, the TS ArtSpace Gallery presents a special exhibition in spring 2025 to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the publication of Franz Kafka’s novella Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung).
In the words of Albert Camus, Kafka’s protagonists are “silent rebels” — figures who respond to the absurdity of existence not with revolutionary gestures, but with quiet, internal resistance. This attitude is embodied by Gregor Samsa, the central character of Metamorphosis, whose transformation and gradual disappearance served as inspiration for the concept of the exhibition.
Hosted across three chamber spaces, the exhibition aims to explore the philosophical and human depths of Kafka’s legacy through contemporary artistic reflections, while also creating space for personal engagement with the themes of the novella in today’s context.
A central piece of the exhibition is Sándor Kardos’s experimental short film Metamorphosis (2008), whose distinctive visual language serves as a conceptual starting point. In connection with the film, photographic interpretations of space are presented, capturing the novella’s atmosphere of confinement, the anxiety of interior spaces, and the visual metaphors of isolation.
Other sections of the exhibition revolve around themes of impermanence, identity, and the erosion of meaning — as well as the slow disintegration of traditional values and symbols. Particularly impactful are the works of documentary photographers, many of whom are active in the daily press, whose depictions of reality lend authenticity and depth to the conceptual arc created by the exhibiting artists.
The convergence of two distinct photographic languages — documentary and artistic reflection — opens up new interpretive possibilities and invites the viewer to recognize their own “silent rebellion” with heightened sensitivity.
